Nursery Syllabus

WELCOME FAMILIES

 TO DISCOVERY SCHOOL!!!

Nursery is going to be a great year full of new experiences and discoveries!! We would like to create an optimal learning and growing environment for your child. In order to make this a successful year from the beginning, it is important that we are all aware of the rules and routines. Thank you for your support!

ATTENDANCE: A successful school experience is the responsibility of the child, the parent and the school.  Your child's progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation.  Regular attendance without tardiness is a key. The school day runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please be on time. The morning routine sets the tone for the rest of the day.

NO TOYS: We ask that the students do not bring their toys from home. We have found this to be the best policy to keep their toys intact. Toys will be allowed whenever the teacher asks for them.

CLOTHING Please remember that children learn through experimenting, discovering, and trying out new materials. This may include such things as playing with paint, glue, sand, water, etc. Kinders are active and will be climbing, jumping, rolling, and other physical activities. Appropriate clothing is important; therefore, please have the students wear casual clothes.

HEALTH: Please let us know of special circumstances which may affect your child. These could include medication that may make him/her sleepy, a death in the family, etc. Also, please let us know of any allergies your child may have, especially food allergies. We sometimes cook or do food activities to complement lessons in Nursery and it would be helpful to know when we plan them.

ILLNESS: The question of when to keep your child home from school is often a difficult one, especially when decisions must be made first thing in the morning.  It is important, however, to keep your child home if he/she is ill. This helps to make them more comfortable and prevents others from becoming ill.  Children function more effectively in the classroom when they are healthy.

KINDNESS: Students in our classroom are encouraged and expected to treat all members of our class as well as others with kindness and respect. Bothering others, bullying and interrupting learning will not be permitted.

SNACK AND LUNCH: Please provide enough food in your child’s lunchbox for snack and lunchtime. This should be nutritious food. We do not allow the children to eat candy at snack time or lunch time. We will all be eating together from 12:25-12:45. We have a microwave in our classroom as a donation from previous parents. If you would like us to heat your child’s lunch please let us know. The only thing we request from you is to make it as simple as possible. Avoid using aluminum foil.

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN HOME AND SCHOOL: Each student was asked to bring a folder. This folder will come home every day but there will not always be papers in it. We send it home on those days in case you wish to send a note to us concerning special instructions about your child. Please return the folder daily. Because we have a hands-on philosophy we do not use a lot of worksheets. The children practice writing in a variety of ways including chalkboards, writing on the board with markers, as well as papers. (We do keep some of their work for our files). The folder will have any information or homework that you need to know about as well as your child’s work which is sent home approximately every 5 days (usually on Fridays.) If you would like to come in and talk with us, please send us a written note. We will be happy to sit down and discuss your concerns.

CLASS RULES: Our class rules are very simple. We ask the children to be nice to each other. We teach them that there is a time to listen and a time to talk. When the teacher says, “Give me three”, they are to look at the teacher, listen, and stop talking. Also, we insist that they do their best. However, we never compare the children. They are all at different stages in the learning process and we want them to have a positive learning experience.

TRANSPORTATION: If your child is going home a different way he/she usually comes to school a WRITTEN NOTE will be requested. For example if he/she is going to be picked up by someone else, if he/she is going to take the bus with a classmate, etc.

PARENTS´ ROLE: Your support and involvement is essential to the success of your child. Please communicate with your child about their school day and work. We encourage you to read with or to your child every night. Read to him/her in the language in which you are most comfortable. We appreciate parent involvement. The Nursery students would love for you to come and share special talents, abilities, and time. Please feel welcome in our class anytime. However, it is better for your child if you do not remain in the classroom daily. Your child needs to mature and begin to develop some independence. They cannot learn if we do everything for them.
