Week of April 25-29

Dear Nursery Parents,

This week we are going to be working with the alphabet. We will be working on recognizing the letters with their sound. The letter for this week we will be the letter Ff. The vocabulary for this letter is: fish, finger, frog, fire, feather, firefighter.

If you have any items at home that begin with this letter, send them over with your child and we will be discussing them in class, we will display them on a table and we will return them back on Friday. The kids get excited to bring things from home.

Some of the books we are going to be reading this week are the following:

Froggy Gets Dressed, by Jonathan London
I think what my kids love about Froggy is that he’s goofy, he has silly sound effects, and there’s a familiarity about the books that’s comforting.  Each book, Froggy’s mother calls “Frooogggy!” and he replies “Whaaat?” Each book, he does something embarrassing, and blushes.  Some Froggy books are better than others; this first one is one of the best.

Fish is Fish, by Leo Lionni
This was a new book for me, and I’m sorry it took me so long to discover it.  In a pond, a minnow and tadpole are great friends. The fish is alarmed when the tadpole turns into a frog and climbs out of the pond.  When the frog returns, he shares stories of everything he’s seen. The fish imagines birds as fish with feathers, cows as fish with udders, and people as fish with legs.  The fish longs to see this amazing world and jumps out of the water.  When the frog rescues him he realizes that, for him, his water world is the most beautiful of all. “Fish is fish.”

In math, will continue working with numbers. We will work on how to represent and recognize numbers using tally marks, ten frames, name of the number, one-to-one correspondence. This week we will be working with number 0.

Our Nursery Rhyme this week is: “Dr. Foster”
I am attaching you the link of the video of this song we will be learning throughout the week. We will learn two versions of this nursery rhyme. Just a little tip to have fun at home listening and acting out our song.

We have talked to the students that we have started the hot season in Honduras. Please provide your child with a water bottle every day. Have them wear light clothes; they can bring a hat to protect from the sun, put sunscreen on their face and arms

In our Science unit we will begin learning about Insects. We are going to be discussing the different types of insects. Children will get the chance to name them and identify different kinds of insects. Some of the vocabulary words we will be focusing are: bee, ant, mosquito, spider, butterfly, caterpillar, ladybug, grasshopper, dragonfly, fly.
If you have any books or posters, ideas or any other material that you would like to share with us it would be greatly appreciated.

In Honduras we celebrate Mother’s Day on May 8th. We would like to invite all of our MOMMIES to have Muffins with your child on Friday May 6th at 8:00 a.m. We are planning on having something nice prepared for you. We hope you can come and spend some time with your child at school.  We would like to ask our wonderful DADDIES to kindly help us with Lps. 150.00 for Mother’s Day gift. Please send it before Friday April 29th. Thank you for your support.

This week’s Challenge at Home will be listening to songs that focus on the sound and vocabulary for letter f and also review abc phonics song. Children know most of the moves to do along with this phonic song.

SUMMER CAMPS AT DISCOVERY SCHOOL - Like last year, there will be two summer camps in the month of June. Discovery Zone 7 will be a fun, artistic and entertaining camp for children 3 to 9 years old. There will also be a reinforcement camp for reading, writing and French for students in grades K-2. Both camps will run from June 13 to July 1, with the same schedule (8:00 a.m. to 12:00). Transportation is available at a small additional cost. If you or a relative/friend is interested, more information can be given to you by Ms. Carolina or at the accounting offices in school.

ECONOMICS BAKE SALES – the third graders will be conducting their integrated Math/Social Studies bake sales on April 21 and 28. They will really appreciate the support of fellow students as they conduct their economics activity.

EARLY DISMISSAL AND HOLIDAY – This Friday, April 29 is an early dismissal day for our students. We will be following P.M. schedule.  We want to remind parents that Monday, May 2 is a holiday. Classes resume on Tuesday, May 3.

RECYCLING CHALLENGE:  Students keep bringing in your recyclable materials (newspapers, magazines, notebooks, paper board boxes, cardboard, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles) for the recycling challenge given by Arca de Esperanzas.  Remember that juice and milk boxes and Pringles-type cans cannot be recycled due to being a pressed mixture of aluminum, plastic, and paper.   Thank you for continuing to support environmental awareness.  Class that meet their challenge of bringing 10 lbs per student will earn a cookie party!
