Week of May 9-13

Dear Nursery Parents,
This week we are going to continue working with the alphabet. We will be working on recognizing the letters with their sound. We will be reviewing letters A-F and working on ABC’s Phonics songs.

In our Science unit we will continue learning about Dinosaur. We are going to be discussing the different types of dinosaurs. Children will get the chance to name them and identify different kinds of dinosaurs. If you have any books or posters, ideas or any other material that you would like to share with us it would be greatly appreciated.

Some of the books we are going to be reading this week are the following:
Doris’s Dinosaur, by Rosemary Wells
Doris is a beaver who doesn’t know how to draw like her classmates. When it’s time to draw a dinosaur, she draws a big blue swirl.  Doris is discouraged until the class visits the art museum and she sees the modern art display, featuring works of art just like hers.
This book is part of the Yoko & Friends School Days series, which I adore.  Rosemary Wells knows how to write simple but wonderful stories that kids can relate to!
Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs, by Mo Willems
This is another fun book from the creator of the Pigeon series and the Elephant and Piggy books.  Not only do kids love this one, but you’ll appreciate all the little jokes thrown in.  When the dinosaurs set a trap of three giant bowls of chocolate pudding, “a poorly supervised little girl named Goldilocks came along.”   Goldilocks is clueless that she has just fallen into a trap until she hears the dinosaurs talking about their catch.  “Goldilocks took a minute to stop and think, which was longer than she was used to stopping and thinking.”
Funny!
How Do Dinosaurs Love Their Dogs? by Jane Yolen
I have loved every book in the “How Do Dinosaurs” series, written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by the amazing Mark Teague.  Each book starts with a dinosaur doing all the wrong things, whether that’s throwing a tantrum at bedtime (in How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night?) or never taking his dog outside.  Each book ends with all the right things that dinosaurs do. Of course these are all lessons for small children, taught in an entertaining and endearing way.

Our Nursery Rhyme this week is: “Old Lady Lived in a Shoe”
I am attaching you the link of the video of this song we will be learning throughout the week. We will learn two versions of this nursery rhyme. Just a little tip to have fun at home listening and acting out our song.

In math, will continue working with numbers. We will work on how to represent and recognize numbers using tally marks, ten frames, name of the number, one-to-one correspondence. This week we will be working with number 7.

SUMMER CAMPS AT DISCOVERY SCHOOL  - Just like last year, there will be two summer camps in the month of June. Discovery Zone 7 will be a fun, artistic and entertaining camp for children 3 to 9 years old. There will also be a reinforcement camp for reading, writing and French for students in grades K-2. Both camps will run from June 13 to July 1, with the same schedule (8:00 a.m. to 12:00). Transportation is available at a small additional cost. If you or a relative/friend is interested, more information can be given to you by Ms. Carolina or at the accounting offices in school.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON MAY 14 - The Discovery School’s third General Assembly meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. at the school's cafeteria.  There will be 4 vacancies on the Board of Directors. Nominations will still be accepted the day of the General Assembly, as specified in our by-laws.
The reward of an “ice cream day” will be offered to the elementary and secondary group with best attendance resulting in a quorum.
ART EXHIBIT AND MUSIC PERFORMANCES – Also on Saturday we will be having our annual Art Exhibit.
CHILD SUPERVISED ACTIVITIES FOR THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY – In order to help our parents attend the General Assembly, the school is providing supervised activities in the Early Childhood area for those parents who would like to bring their children to school. There will be movies, arts & crafts, board games and word games available for those who find child care on Saturday a difficulty!
